UK has reported another 58,784 new coronavirus cases, which is the highest daily spike in the nation since the beginning of the pandemic. UK has imposed a nationwide lockdown amid the massive spike in coronavirus cases.

UK has reported another 58,784 new coronavirus cases, which is the highest daily spike in the nation since the beginning of the pandemic. UK has imposed a nationwide lockdown amid the massive spike in coronavirus cases after the emergence of new mutant coronavirus strain.

This is the seventh day in a row that daily new cases have crossed 50,000 in Britain. The total number of coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 2,713,563.

Meanwhile, another 407 have died within 28 days of a positive test, bringing the total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Britain to 75,431.

On Monday night, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson imposed a new stay-at-home lockdown until at least mid-February to battle through the “critical moment” in the coronavirus pandemic with UK grappling with a major surge in Covid-19 cases due to the new virus strain.

Addressing the country in a televised address from Downing Street on Monday night, Johnson said the UK is at a pivotal stage in its fight against the rapidly spreading infections as he confirmed a complete shutdown of schools and businesses, similar to the very first nationwide lockdown back in March 2020.

"As I speak to you tonight our hospitals are under more pressure from Covid than at any time," said Johnson.

UK has begun mass rollout of multiple coronavirus vaccines, including the Pfizer vaccine and AstraZeneca vaccine. However, the rising number of coronavirus cases in the UK continue to remain a worry across the world. Several nations have imposed flight restrictions on UK in a bid to curb the new virus strain from spreading across the world.

However, India and many other nations in Europe and other continents have reported cases of the new coronavirus strain. India has so far reported 38 cases of the mutant strain.
