Mizoram on Sunday reported the highest-single day Covid-19 fatality as three elderly men aged between 82 and 87 years have succumbed to the infection at Zoram Medical College (ZMC), near Aizawl, an official said.
With this, the Covid-19 death toll in the state has mounted to 20, the official said.
The three patients from Aizawl and Saitual districts have been undergoing treatment for Covid-19 at the intensive care unit of ZMC after their diagnosis with the infection between April 24 and May 3, he said. The three died of Covid-19 pneumonia on Sunday within 5 hours, he said. Mizoram on Sunday reported 169 Covid-19 cases, taking the state’s tally to 7,550.
12 policemen, who have recently returned from West Bengal after polls duty, were among the newly infected people.
The policemen, who initially tested negative for Covid-19, have been placed under quarantine since their arrival in the state in April, he said.
Of the 169 fresh cases, 105 cases were reported from Aizawl district, 11 from Lunglei district, 12 cases each from Siaha and Kolasib districts, 10 from Saitual district, 7 from Serchhip district, 8 from Khawzawl district and 4 cases were from Mamit district.
52 patients have travel history while the rest were found to have locally contracted the infection, he said.
Of the 169 patients, 56 have developed symptoms of Covid19.
On Saturday, the state reported 235 Covid-19 cases, which include 47 police personnel, who have returned from West Bengal after election duty. Mizoram now as 1,866 active cases now stands at 1,866, while 5,664 people have recovered from the infection.
The recovery rate is 75 per cent and the overall infection rate is 2.30 per cent.
The state registered a single- day infection rate of 6.37 per cent on Sunday.
So far, Aizawl district reported the highest Covid-19 cases at 5,077, followed by Lunglei district and Lawngtlai district, which reported 553 and 499 cases respectively.
Hnahthial district reported the least at 24 and is the lone Covid-19 free district as of now. Commencing from Monday, a complete lockdown will be imposed in the state to break the chain of rising Covid-19 transmission.
The full lockdown will remain in force till 4 am of May 17.
