With the death of a 24-year-old man Saturday night, Mizoram's COVID-19 death toll has risen to 24.
An official statement said, Lalfakzuala Jongte, a resident of Bawngkawn South in Aizawl, died due to COVID-induced pneumonia at Zoram Medical College here at 9:15 pm Saturday.
He was admitted to the hospital on April 17 due to COVID infection along with his entire family members. His family have been discharged weeks ago.
He was said to be a healthy person. Sone of old-time popular singer Thanga Jongte, Jongte was popular as a child actor for his widely acclaimed role in a family movie.
Meanwhile, with 181 new cases detected during the last 24 hours, Mizoram's virus caseload has reached 8,680.
The new cases, detected from 2,465 samples tested, put Saturdaý's positivity rate at 7.34 per cent.
Aizawl district reported the highest number of cases at 103, followed by Lunglei with 53. While 14 cases were reported from Kolasib, seven cases from Serchhip, two cases from Champhai and one case each from Khawzawl and Siaha.
Of the 181 new patients, only 15 have returned/ arrived from outside the State while the rest were found to have been infected through local transmission.
Mizoram had on Saturday reported 123 new cases.
The new cases were detected from 1,661 samples tested on Friday, putting the single day's positivity rate at 7.40 per cent.
Only seven of the 123 new patients have travel history.
While 76 were diagnosed with COVID-19 through contact tracing, the source of infection of the remaining 40 patients was not known. Mizoram currently has 2,158 while a total of 6,498 have recovered from the disease.
