The District Fire Prevention Committee, Kolasib district on Monday selected Thingthen village as the village which has taken the best initiative in taking precaution against fire outbreaks in the district.
Dr. H. Lalthlangliana who chaired the committee said it was unfortunate that the past year saw many fire outbreaks in Mizoram. However, he said, the fire outbreaks in Kolasib were put out quickly with the help of the government and cooperation of the public. Discussions were also held on how the upcoming Green Mizoram Day would be observed and it was decided that on June 11, 2021, a program will be held to kick off Green Mizoram Day plantation drive in Saidan field, Kolasib.
Kolasib DFO N.Viji, IFS gave a report on the fire outbreaks in Kolasib saying there were 361 reports of fires which totaled to an area of around 323.71 hectares out of which 307.41 hectares were a result of slash and burn cultivation.
Thingthen village was selected after it was assessed on various categories from Village Council and Branch YMA reports, and also from reports of the Forest Department Official and BDO. The first prize went to Thingthelh, while the second prize went to Khamrang and the third prize to N.Chhimluang. The first prize was awarded with five lakhs, while second and third prizes received 3 lakhs and 2 lakhs respectively.
