OUR REPORTER AIZAWL, JUNE 1
Dr. Pachuau Lalmalsawma on Tuesday warned the public against the Covid19 situation in Mizoram saying the spike in Covid19 positive cases and deaths in the state is a cause of great worry.
During the 1st Wave of COVID-19 (March, 2020 – March, 2021), there were 6131 positive cases and 11 people lost their lives. However, in the second wave, between April to May 2021, there have been 7923 cases and 30 people have died in the short period.
The month of May has especially seen an alarming rise in cases as per the spokesperson.
There were 6, 268 new positive cases that were identified and the number of Covid19 cases in one month alone is more than the number of positive cases that were identified from last year March 2020 to April 2021 where the total positive cases were 6131. The month of May saw the same amount plus 137 new cases which totals to 6268. Among the positive cases that were detected in May, the number of symptomatic cases were 50.62%.
Of the Covid19 cases found in May 2021, people entering the state from other states/countries made up for only 26% of the cases. The number of cases that were detected at the point of entry was 160 while 449 were detected at a later time after they had entered the state.
Pachuau said, on closer inspection, it can be found that there is a high rate of community transmission which is a result of a neglectful lifestyle which goes against the Covid19 appropriate behavior.
He advised the public to take precaution even within one’s compounds and avoid crowds and visitation of neighbors and family. The spokesperson said it is advisable that tobacco products are avoided as the users of tobacco products are at a higher risk as per experts.
As of May 31, the number of Covid19 positive cases in Mizoram was 12,399 out of which 41 have died. Aizawl District makes up for 68.65% of the total cases whereas other districts make up for 31. 35%.
