Mizoram reports highest singleday spike of Covid-19 cases

Mizoram on Sunday reported the highest ever single-day spike of Covid-19 cases as 938 people, including over 157 children, have newly tested positive for the infection, pushing the state’s tally to 32,083, a health department official said. 364 fresh cases were confirmed at RT-PCR laboratory in Zoram Medical College (ZMC), while 534 cases were detected through Rapid Antigen Test and the remaining 40 were found through TrueNat tests from various districts, he said.

 

The fresh 938 cases detected from 4,619 samples put the single-day positivity rate at 20.30 per cent, he said said.

 

Aizawl district reported the highest fresh cases at 643, followed by Kolasib district at 103 and Mamit district at 54. The remaining cases were reported from Champhai district (32), Lunglei district (52), Lawngtlai district (32), Siaha district (10), Serchhip district (16) and Saitual district (1).

 

Six patients have travel history and the rest 932 were found to have locally contracted the virus, the official said.

 

Of the 938 patients, 384 have developed symptoms of Covid-19, he said. Mizoram now has 8,576 Covid19 active cases, while 23,371 people have recovered from the infection.

 

The Covid-19 death toll in the state has climbed to 136 as two more people have succumbed on Saturday and Sunday. The recovery rate among Covid-19 patients is 72.84 per cent and death toll is 0.42 per cent.

 

The northeastern state has tested over 5.93 lakh samples for Covid-19 till date.

 

State immunisation officer Dr. Lalzawmi said that over 6.18 lakh people have been inoculated with Covid-19 vaccine till Saturday.

 

Meanwhile, state health minister Dr. R. Lalthangliana on Sunday said that the state government is making massive efforts to expedite mass testing drive for Covid-19 in Aizawl Municipal Coporation (AMC) area during total lockdown.

 

Total lockdown in AMC has been extended till July 31.

 

The minister on Sunday convened a meeting with health officials and representatives of Indian Medical Association, Non-Government Hospital Association of Mizoram and Medical Operational Team on COVID19 to review about the mass testing drive in AMC area.

 

He told the meeting that Covid19 positive cases have significantly increased in the due to the ongoing mass testing drive but there is nothing to be panic. He said that the state now has enough testing kits for Covid-19.
