Mizoram logs 1,741 new Covid cases, 3 deaths

Mizoram COVID-19 situation continues to get worse as 1,741 new cases and three fatalities were reported on Thursday, government sources said.

 

The state's COVID-19 count now reached 93,660 while the death toll rose to 309, it said.

 

The state reported 1,380 cases and three fatalities on the previous day.

 

According to a statement by state information and public relations department, at least 304 children were among the newly infected people.

 

The single-day positivity rate was 18.44 per cent as the fresh cases were detected from 9,440 sample tests, it said.

 

As usual Aizawl district reported the highest number of fresh cases at 915, followed by Champhai district (388) and Lunglei district (117), it said.

 

Mizoram now has15,815 active cases, while 77,536 people have recovered from the infection so far.

 

According to a government bulletin, Aizawl district now has the highest number of active cases at 10,853, followed by Siaha district (1,078) and Lunglei district (910).

 

Saitual district has the least active cases at 32.

 

However, a complete lockdown was imposed on Saitual town area commencing from 7 pm on September 29 (Wednesday) to break the chain of rising Covid-19 cases in the town. The lockdown will remain in force till 7 pm on October 6, a notification issued by the district magistrate said. The state has conducted more than 10.97 lakh sample tests for Covid-19 till date. According to state immunisation officer Dr. Lalzawmi, over 6.8 lakh people have been vaccinated till Wednesday, of which 4.36 lakh people have received full doses.

 

Meanwhile, state health minister Dr. R. Lalthangliana said that RT-PCR laboratory would be set up in those districts, which have no the facility till now.

 

Mizoram has only one RT-PCR laboratory at Zoram Medical College (ZMC), which is the lone dedicated Covid-19 hospital in the state, near Aizawl.

 

During a meeting on Wednesday, Lalthangliana had said that the government is making effort to set up RT-PCR laboratory one after another in all the remaining districts, which do not have the laboratory, an official said on Thursday.

 

Earlier, the Guwahati High Court has instructed the state government to set up RT-PCR laboratory at Lunglei to benefit four southern districts of the state following a PIL filed by an organisation.
